Position Summary:

General Summary:

The Director Inpatient Services is responsible to direct the operations of inpatient services in accordance with The Joint Commission standards and regulatory agencies, maintaining high quality and compliance with standards of nursing care. Provides administration and leadership for all inpatient programming. Focuses resources to be fiscally responsible, strategic, and supportive of the overall Mission of WellSpan Philhaven.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Represents WellSpan Philhaven at regional focus groups regarding inpatient services as directed.
  2. Develops and recommends implementation plans to meet strategies for inpatient programs in response to market data and trends.
  3. Participates in the broader WellSpan Philhaven organization strategic planning process as requested.
  4. Maintains a team approach with the Clinical Directors, Nurse Managers, charge nurses and Psychiatrists to develop a high functioning leadership team on each inpatient unit.
  5. Provides direction for staffing levels. Works with the scheduling coordinator to maintain staffing levels that support high quality care and the ability to admit to all units on all shifts.
  6. Provides for training and education of staff to support the ability to admit and manage patients with complex symptoms and acute episodes of illness.
  7. Develops processes to maintain a culture of safety and a safe environment.
  8. Serves as primary support for the Access Center regarding difficult admission requests. Provides direction to Access Center staff regarding requests for admission for acutely challenging cases. Works with the Clinical Directors to provide individualized clinical supports specific to the patients needs.
  9. Consistently manages the units to support non-traditional approaches to accommodating additional patients. Takes action when needed to restructure patient rooms and staffing as required to support serving additional admissions.
  10. Conducts annual performance evaluations on Clinical Directors and RN Shift Managers, and other nursing care givers as assigned. Responsible for recommending corrective action plans and formal disciplinary action as appropriate.
  11. Consults with Clinical Directors and staffing coordinators to understand the staffing and hiring needs to support the needs of the unit.
  12. Collaborates with the Nurse Managers and Clinical Directors in the hiring process. Responsible for initiating requests for approval of new and replacement positions.
  13. Develops process to support unit specific orientation and training for all new staff.
  14. Assesses ongoing education and training needs of the unit staff and works with the Chief Nursing Officer and Director of Professional Development to develop training and education required to support the needs of the program.
  15. Develops a culture of the program staff that is positive and supports the broader organizations strategic priorities. Conducts exit interviews of terminating staff as deemed appropriate.
  16. Works with the Chief Financial Officer to develop a budget for each inpatient unit.
  17. Develops processes to monitor the daily operational performance of each unit to achieve budgeted financial targets.
  18. Works with the Clinical Directors and Nurse Managers to allocate resources that achieve budgeted financial targets while maintaining high quality of care.
  19. Provides presentations in the community to educate and promote WellSpan Philhaven and support the community.
  20. Serves on community boards and task forces as requested by the CEO.

Department Description:

Inpatient Behavioral Health (BHS) at York Hospital is a very diverse 63 bed acute care unit, serving patients 18 and older with a variety of mental health diagnoses and medical comorbidities with a primary focus on crisis stabilization.  We are one department that has 4 units (A, B, C and D), each having a different level of care and acuity.  Patients are admitted as either a 201 (Voluntary) or 302 (Involuntary) with an average length of stay of 7 days, with some patients staying longer and others staying fewer days.  BHS has a strong collaborative team made up of Psychiatrists, Medical Doctors, Nurses, Social Workers, Therapists, Psychiatric Technicians and Unit Secretaries that work as a team to provide exceptional patient care, along with our consult team which provides support services for all of York Hospital.  If your passion is Psychiatric nursing, come join our team!

Required Skills
  • Leadership skills necessary to develop a shared vision, build productive alliances, think strategically, manage change, and manage continuous quality improvement. At least two years previous management experience preferred.
  • Problem analysis, conceptual and strategic skills, and creativity necessary to develop programming and staff training.
  • Management skills necessary to coach and train staff, set goals, empower others, maintain accountability, foster team work, manage conflicts and resolve problems, and respect and value diversity.
  • Competency in continuous quality improvement necessary to design, implement, monitor and standardize performance improvement and process redesign initiatives in the program.
  • Organization and planning skills necessary to effectively manage and juggle multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of adult therapeutic modalities, sound judgment and good decision making skills necessary to develop staff training program.
  • Interpersonal competencies necessary to listen and understand the needs of others, to collaborate, negotiate, and persuade.
  • Oral and written communication skills necessary to speak assertively and communicate effectively.
Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required with current Registered Nurse licensure in Pennsylvania. Completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of work experience in behavioral healthcare management. Experience in Inpatient operations preferred.
