Certified Surgical First Assistant 
Full Time 
Day/Evening Shift 
4 x 10 hour shifts 
No Call 

Job Description:

Under the direct supervision of the surgeon, performs a variety of duties in the operative treatment of surgical patients. Assists in positioning, skin preparation and draping of the patient. Provides hemostasis, wound exposure, handles tissue appropriately to reduce the potential for injury, sutures tissue, and applies dressings to the wound under the direction of the surgeon. Uses surgical instruments skillfully in ways consistent with their design and purpose. Performs other medical services as required within the scope of practice for a Certified Surgical Technologist.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provides primary surgical assistance to the surgeon during the operative procedure.
  2. Assists in positioning, skin preparation, and draping of the patient.
  3. Provides hemostasis, wound exposure, handles tissue appropriately to reduce the potential for injury, sutures tissue, and applies dressings to the wound under the direction of the surgeon.
  4. Uses surgical instruments skillfully in ways consistent with their design and purpose.
  5. Assists in transporting the patient postoperatively.
  6. Communicates information to the post anesthesia care unit.

Qualifications:

  • Post High School Vocational/Specialized Training
  • Associate's Degree
  • Successful completion of a Certified Surgical First Assistant program that includes a didactic and at least 140 documented procedures
  • The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification; Certified Surgical First Assistants (CSFA) certification; or The American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) Surgical Assistant-Certified (SA-C) certification;
  • BLS certification
  • 3 - 5 years as a Certified Surgical Technologist
  • Other combinations of formal education, training and experience may be considered.
