Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Foreman, must have full competency in two core engineering trades. The core engineering trades are: Carpentry, Mechanic, Plumber, and Electrician. The benchmarks for full competency are listed below by trade.


Duties and Responsibilities


The following are essential job accountabilities for Carpenter:

   1  Constructs and maintains building woodwork such as bins, counters, benches, stairs and doors.

   2  Repairs articles of furniture such as cabinets, chairs, storage fixtures and office equipment.  Repairs loose or broken joints.

   3  Builds, repairs, and installs as directed within the capabilities of the trade.

   4  Repairs or replaces windows, doors, ceiling and floor tile plus various wooden wall coverings.

   5  Replaces door or window glass.

   6  Installs lock and passage sets and panic door hardware and repairs same. Maintains inventory and log of locks and

   7  Requisitions lumber, hardware, and other supplies and equipment; maintains inventory of carpentry tools and equipment.

   8  Works from blueprints and drawings in constructing and repairing woodwork.

The following are essential job accountabilities for Mechanic:

   9  Examines machinery or mechanical equipment and identifies reason for malfunction.

  10  Performs maintenance, repair or replacement of broken parts.

  11  Uses hand tools, power tools and testing instruments to repair and maintain machinery and equipment.

  12  Extracts data from sources such as blue prints, engineering orders, reports and specifications.

  13  Adjusts functional parts of mechanical devices as necessary.

  14  Repairs and overhauls pumps and heat exchangers; removes and replaces coils; replaces valves and associated equipment on steam systems or boilers up to 125 psi.

  15  Installs new equipment and systems and repairs and maintains current equipment and systems as needed.

  16  Dismantles, moves, installs or repairs various types of machinery and mechanical equipment.

  17  Inspects mechanical rooms of the hospital to ensure proper operation of heat, air conditioning, and ventilation fans and medical support equipment.

  18  Sets up and operates a variety of machines such as lathes, precision grinders, mills, etc., to perform machining operations.

  19  Cleans and lubricates parts.

The following are essential job accountabilities for Plumber:

  20  Repairs valves, fixtures and fittings in heating and drainage.

  21  Prepares, installs, replaces and/or repairs pipe and plumbing fixtures by threading, measuring and shaping.

  22  Cuts, bends, threads pipes; fits threaded pipes with adjoining pipe assemblies.

  23  Performs pressure tests on piping and gas lines to insure proper functioning.

  24  Prepares work area by disassembling old systems and cutting holes in walls and floors for pipes to pass.

  25  Repairs access holes in walls by replacing tile, replastering, painting and/or caulking.

  26  Replaces washers, faucets and broken pipes, caulks leaks, opens clogged drains.

  27  Works from as-built drawings, blue prints or installation instructions.

  28  Updates riser diagrams, as-built drawings, etc. as needed.

  29  Installs, maintains and repairs sinks, showers, toilets, water heaters and other plumbing fixtures.

  30  Repairs and overhauls pumps and heat exchangers; removes and replaces coils; replaces valves and associated equipment on steam systems or boilers up to 125 psi.

  31  Installs and repairs medical gas lines in patient rooms and operating rooms.

The following are essential job accountabilities for Electrician:

  32  Repairs, installs, replaces and tests electrical circuits, equipment and appliances using appropriate tools and testing instruments.

  33  Replaces faulty switches, sockets and other simple elements of electrical systems.

  34  Mounts motors, transformers and lighting fixtures into position and completes circuits according to diagram specifications.

  35  Measures, cuts, threads and installs electrical conduit.

  36  Pulls wiring through conduit.

  37  Splices wires.

  38  Connects wiring to fixtures and power equipment.

  39  Installs grounding leads.

  40  Ensures that all circuits are properly protected and all motors have appropriate starting circuits to absorb initial starting surge.

  41  Ensures that all ground fault circuits are working properly and that major circuit breakers are properly marked as to the circuits they control.

  42  Inspects and performs safety tests on electrical lighting, emergency generators, alarm systems, communication system, medical equipment, and HVAC system.

  43  Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment and safety standards.

  44  Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.

  45  Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

The following are nonessential job accountabilities for ADA purposes:

  46  Keeps work areas orderly, clean and safe.  Ensures proper care in the use of equipment and supplies.

  47  Snow removal for extended periods of time using hand shovel, snow blower, walk behind salt spreader, small tractor or truck with plow. Requires frequent bending and lifting up to 50 lbs, extended exposure to cold and wind conditions.

  48  Applies snow melting chemicals when necessary on roads, walkways and outside staircases.

  49  Performs other related duties as identified.



  • Minimum Experience:
    • 5 - 7 years
    • Required Cert / Training As required in specific core trade job description
  • Minimum Education:
    • High School or G.E.D.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Heavy physical effort (lift/carry 26 to 50 lbs)
    • Frequent prolonged standing/walking
    • Pushes/pulls or moves/lifts heavy equipment/supplies
    • Manual dexterity and mobility
    • Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching
