Assistant Manager for Behavioral Health Services

Licensed as a Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Clinical Social Work (LCSW)

Job Description: 

This is a professional position that is responsible for the functioning of the assigned Inpatient Program and that provides administrative and clinical leadership for operation of a 24 hour a day program. Under general supervision of the Nurse Manager, provides individual, group and/or family therapy. Provides preadmission screening to determine appropriateness for admission. Interviews patients and/or families to obtain psycho-social histories. Collaborates with the treatment team to develop a treatment plan and coordinates discharge planning

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Directs the leadership, development, implementation and monitoring of a strategic plan and action plans for 24-hour a day program.
  2. Helps to establish a culture of collaboration among staff. Promotes open and creative exploration of issues involved in a decision and promotes alignment of the efforts of all persons to create a shared vision.
  3. Fosters positive, productive working relationships with internal customers, as well as agencies, community agencies, and associations. Promotes a service orientation among staff and interns, and students.
  4. Gives leadership to the development, training, and implementation of programming, therapeutic milieu, and structured behavioral management systems.
  5. Serves as a program liaison with other departments and programs.
  6. Provides weekend/holiday on-call services, as needed.
  7. Facilitates problem-solving and problem resolution of clinical care issues.
  8. In collaboration with Nurse Manager, constructs a plan, and devises or revises structures or processes.
  9. Ensures that appropriate documentation is maintained in accordance with established standards and procedures.
  10. Assesses staff educational and training needs. Provides staff education and training and assists in staff’s ongoing professional development.
  11. Assists with interviewing, selection, hiring, orientation, performance evaluation, corrective action, Performance improvement plans, and training of therapists and support staff assigned to the unit.
  12. Provides clinical and administrative supervision and/or mentoring of assigned staff and clinical interns. Conducts annual performance evaluations of assigned staff.
  13. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the behavioral healthcare.
  14. As needed, interviews patients and family members to obtain information about home environment, family relationships, health history, and patient's personality traits;
  15. Conducts individual or group therapy sessions; Assesses patients' progress and modifies or extends treatment program accordingly;
  16. Provides therapeutic intervention with patient and family including individual, marital, parental, family and group therapies;
  17. Documents current, accurate observations of care to the patient in appropriate records;
  18. Coordinates care of assigned patients;
  19. Performs other related duties as identified.

Qualifications

  • Notes:
    • Other combinations of formal education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum Experience:
    • 5 years of experience in a professional behavioral healthcare setting. Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required. A minimum of two (2) years clinical experience in the mental health field including the provision of psychotherapy to individuals, families, couples, and/or groups is required. Play therapy experience required as applicable. Two years post licensure experience preferred. Evidence of participation in educational programs to update and maintain knowledge and clinical skills.
  • Minimum Education:
    • Graduate of an accredited Master's degree program in counseling, psychology or other mental health field.
  • Required Certification:
    • Licensed as a Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Clinical Social Work (LCSW) in Pennsylvania. Current CPR certification required. Child Abuse History Clearance and Criminal Background Check required.
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license in the current state of residence. Driving record must meet requirements established by WellSpan Risk Management.
  • Required Courses:
    • Must provide clearance per the Child Protective Services Law amended by PA Act 33 of 1985.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Classified as medium work by the Dictionary of Occupational Titles: May exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10–20 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible (up to 10 pounds) force constantly in order to move objects.
    • Stands occasionally on carpet or tile (mostly within the unit).
    • Walks to and from different departments within the hospital occasionally.
    • Sits frequently on a hard or cushioned chair during normal shift.
    • Lifts up to 50 pounds laterally to and from waist level on an occasional basis.
    • Carries up to 15 pounds for distances of up to 100 feet occasionally.
    • Pushes/pulls up to 125 pounds occasionally from floor to floor; in crisis situations, throughout the hospital.
    • Occasionally bends, squats, and kneels form an upright position to lower levels.
    • Occasionally twists, stretches, and reaches from waist level to higher and lower levels.
    • Manual dexterity and flexibility adequate for operating hand/arm controls on wheelchairs.
    • Near-visual acuity necessary for deciphering fine print; must be able to observe specific patient actions from a minimum distance of 15 feet away.
    • Auditory acuity adequate for hearing telephone conversations, overhead pagers, alarms, call bells, and normal voice tones when not facing the individual.
    • Ability to participate in therapeutic activities.
    • Ability to restrain patients who act out physically.
    • Ability to respond rapidly to unpredictable emergencies while protecting self and/or patients/others. Mental Demands - Possesses good general mental health; ability to be assertive and exercise good sound judgment; ability to speak, read, and write the English Language; ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal from; ability to work under pressure while establishing priorities. Occasional exposure to agitated or aggressive patients.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills; leadership skills; problem-solving/analytical abilities; organizational and planning skills; management skills; Knowledge of and ability in the care and handling of clients in at least the adult and older age group; Knowledgeable of the behavioral healthcare environment, behavioral de-escalation, crisis management, milieu management, and technology trends to develop programming and staff training, provide supervision and clinical services; Competency in continuous quality improvement necessary to design, implement, monitor and standardize performance improvement and process redesign initiatives in the program; Competency in child, adolescent and/or adult therapeutic modalities, sound judgment and good decision-making skills necessary to develop staff training program, provide clinical supervision of staff, and to provide individual and family therapy.
